English Curiosities

The longest word in English:
Some people say that the longest word is SmileS, because it has a mile between the two “S”. Of course it is a joke, but many people wonder what it is the longest word in the English vocabulary. The answer is pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.  It is a rare disease caused by the inhalation of microscopic particles of volcanic ashes. Its abbreviation is pneumoconiosis.


The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog:
 “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” is a pangram. A pangram is a phrase which contains all the letters of the alphabet. It is used to test typewriters and keyboards. This sentence is widely known because it is short and coherent
The sentence has 35 letters and all the 26 letters of the English alphabet appear at least once. Some letters occur more than one time: t, h, u and r are used twice, e is used three times and o is used four times.

    The longest portuguese word is "arroz" since it starts in "a" and ends in "z"

    Now seriously

    "The quick fox jumps over the lazy dog"
    It's something that's in every microsoft computer since 2002, and it's also used to check for any mistakes in the different fonts of the computer.
